LIPOSUCTION SURGERY (FAT REMOVAL)

Liposuction surgery, also known as fat removal, is the surgical removal of fat tissue from just below the surface of the skin. It is used to reduce the fat surplus which disturbs any part of the body.

CAN LIPOSUCTION SURGERY BE USED FOR LOSING WEIGHT?

WHAT KIND OF PROBLEM MAY OCCUR AFTER LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

The surgical incisions are too small. The incisions are about a half inch in length and the remaining scars are too small to be visible. Pigmentation changes (brown spots), which can be permanent, may rarely occur in cases of skin loosening, fluctuation or exposure to the sun in the treating region.

WHAT KIND OF ANESTHESIA IS USED?

Liposuction surgery can be performed under local anesthesia and sedation. The patient will be partially awake but will not feel pain. Epidural anesthesia can be quite sufficient for operations to be performed only in the lower regions. If it is planned to apply the operation to a wide area or multiple regions, general anesthesia will be appropriate. In this case, the patient will sleep during the operation.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES LIPOSUCTION SURGERY TAKE?

The operation lasts for 1-2 hours, but depending on the size and amount of the vacuumed area, the duration can be extended from half an hour to several hours.

HOW IS LIPOSUCTION SURGERY PERFORMED?

To start the surgery, a small incision (cut) is made to insert the small absorbent tubes called the “cannula” into the skin. The outer end of the cannula is connected to a powerful suction machine. The doctor cuts the fat by moving the cannula through the subcutaneous fat layer and sucks it out. It is ensured to make the surface of the fatty region to be removed straighter and smoother by entering into it from different points.  Sometimes additional small incisions may be needed to remove the amount of fat that is appropriate.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

Bleeding and edema are usually prevented by wearing corset to the vacuum-absorbed area. The skin is provided to shape properly with new body lines at the same time. The corset also reduces the pain of the patient to a degree and allows her/him to move more easily. The corset may need to be worn continuously for a month according to the prediction of the doctor, and then the doctor can recommend wearing it only during the day.

DO THE REMOVED FATS LEAD TO WEIGHT LOSS?

Weight loss is not immediately visible, resulting from the fats removed with vacuum after liposuction surgery. Edema and water retention, which occur in the operating region, are the main reasons for this.

WHEN CAN YOU RETURN TO WORK AFTER LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?

Most of the patients can return to their social life and work within 2-3 days, and some of them may continue to have aches. It is appropriate that you decide on when to start work depending on the doctor’s recommendation. The size of the surgery and how the patient feels are very important.

WHEN IS THE HEALING PROCESS COMPLETED?

All the swelling and color changes will eliminate within 1-2 months after liposuction surgery, sometimes it can take up to 6 months to lose some swelling. The doctor monitors the patient’s condition during this time and decides whether or not an additional intervention is needed.

ARE THE FATS RETAKEN AFTER BEING REMOVED WITH LIPOSUCTION SURGERY?
